Sallie at the Sahara Apartments in Las Vegas. “If anybody can look better than this,” she smiled for the camera. In the land of the fat, the gym-trim woman is queen. First time I ever heard her say a complimentary word about herself in our 26 years together. It was about time.

 

After hearing the Civil Rights Act of 1958 abolished separate but equal laws. “Integration? Whooeee! We’re saved. Fat chance. It ain’t more’n another blind alley wearing dress clothes. Save us from the tyranny of piecemeal solutions, which in time take on an aura of permanence and gospel truth.”
